In May 2018, the Supreme Court of the United States suspended the ban on sports betting, which had only acknowledged the bet in Nevada. This has increased the possibility of a bill for accepting sports betting in all 50 states.

The nature of sports gambling is changing rapidly. New types of gambling (and gambling in general) and new types of betting have emerged in recent years. Most of the existing research on problem gambling in sports was conducted before gambling split into electronic forms.

Popularity and Growth of Sports Gambling

Sports gambling is popular and its popularity is growing. Nearly half of U. S. consumers bet on sporting events. In 2015, the rate of online gambling on sports reached 45%. The rate of internet sports has grown significantly in recent years.

Fantasy sports gambling continues to grow explosively. Studies show that the number of people involved in fantasy sports increased from approximately 14 million in 2004 to 57 million in 2018. This is particularly worrying from a problem gambling perspective, as active participation in fantasy games is associated with a significant increase in the severity of problem gambling.

This SCOTUS decision marked one of the largest expansions in the history of gambling in recent history. As of February 2021, more than 25 states and the District of Columbia have passed relevant legislation, and many more, including Minnesota, are considering legislation. Early indications suggest that demand for sports tickets has subsided, and there is an even greater desire to have them available online.

Online sports have some aspects that cause public health concerns about the number of gambling that may result in it:

  • A wide range of online gambling, such as betting on a portable computer or a mobile device, can form a different model from those related to real stores. For those who gamble to facilitate psychological distress, online games are more convenient, have privacy, few social demands, can use mental action substances during the game, and can trust them late at night. You may think. If the game and the next bet are in real time, there is no friction. According to early signs, those who bet on mobile devices have more problems than those who like ground rates.
  • Live i n-play rate and Microstlot. In addition to traditional sports betting, which is around the winners of the game, modern sports players can bet each event, for example, the winner of the next glasses in tennis. This will significantly reduce the time lag between beds and compensation. This is a speed cycle associated with dangerous impulsive actions for some butter.
College-Aged and Youth Are at Higher Risk

According to a 2017 survey, more than 13 % of young people are betting on sports teams. 75 to 80 % of students have gambling in the past year. According to other surveys, professional athletes have a higher gambling addiction rate than ordinary people.

Marketing Inhibits Ability to Stop Gambling

The gambling environment is affected by the marketing promotion of online gambling providers. It is too early to guess the impact of advertising on a problematic sports gambler, but according to a survey, problem sports gamblers emphasize the ease of gamblers and provide ris k-free prizes. I found that if I stopped betting in front of me, it would be difficult to bet.

In Minnesota, a bill for accepting sports betting was considered (February 2022), but it was not deliberated. It is expected that a new bill will be submitted during the parliament in 2023. • A. Specifically, one percent of sports betting tax revenue is allocated to §245. 98 to state gambling programs, 1/2 % of the Ministry of Health and 1/2 percent is allocated to the State Gambling Division of the State Committee. We recommend the wording. This will expand outreach, surveys, and research, and can provide more funds, as the number of Minnesota people, which have gambling problems, are expected to increase.
  • A. In other states, there are laws and agreements and agreements that make serious gambling programs as essentials of business planning business planning, including employees and employees who are suffering from gamblers with problematic gamblers. It has been established.
  • 4. In order to monitor the impact of gambling and develop data that supports measures based on scientific evidence to alleviate the impact, research on the rate of gambling poisoning before and after expanding will be conducted.

In addition, NCPG has led to serious rules for online gambling and instructions on the protection of purchasers for fantasy sports. MNAPG and NCPG testified in 2020 and continue to communicate with lawmakers. See the Advocacy Resources Page for the opinions and views of MNAPG and NCPG.
