UC Davis breaks ground on $3.74B hospital tower
UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, California, has broken ground on a new $3. 74 billion facility that will include a 14-story hospital tower and a five-story medical pavilion.
The new tower will add nearly 1 million square meters of space to the existing medical center, including new operating rooms, an imaging center, a pharmacy and burn building, and 334 private rooms.
The more than 250 patient rooms are designed to be flexible and responsive in the event of a surge in patient numbers, such as during a pandemic, forest fires, or other natural disasters. These rooms will simply be converted into active therapy rooms with zero-gravity insulation to treat patients while hospitalized.
"We are incorporating some of the lessons learned from the recent pandemic into this new tower. For example, three of the four rooms in this new tower could potentially simply be converted into true active care units, tripling our active care unit capacity," UC Davis Health CEO David Lubarsky said at a press conference.
The current 646-bed facility will have 675 to 700 inpatient beds upon completion of the plan in 2030.
"This plan further leverages the excellent qualities of UC Davis Medical Center, which is ranked as the No. 1 hospital in Sacramento and has some of the best physicians in the state. "UC Davis Health is the second-largest employer in the Sacramento region, and it certainly provides not only medical support, but also workspace, helping to improve the well-being of the surrounding community."

As part of the partnership, the 65-year-old Providence St. Mary's Hospital will close and a 260-bed hospital will be built in Victorville, California, the organization announced on June 3. The hospital will be a general emergency facility and may include a medical office building and other outpatient services. The hospital will be operated by Providence.
According to the Daily Press, Providence St. Mary's Hospital will close because it does not meet California's new earthquake standards that will go into effect in 2030. Modernizing the hospital will cost as much as building a new one, the newspaper heard from hospital executives.
Eric Bechsler, president of Operations & Strategies for Providence's Southern Region, spoke to the Daily Press about what the integration of the Renton (Washington) health system with Kaiser (Odeland, California) will look like.
"The delivery of health care services has become so complex that Providence has concluded that an affiliate that we have been serving would provide real benefits, especially in areas where there are significant levels of serious health risks," he told the newspaper. He added that the partnership with Kaiser would allow the hospital to provide "a higher level of care."
The new hospital is expected to open in 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

Due to budgetary deficits caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the academic health system postponed the project implementation in May 2020.
The postponement means that the new hospital is scheduled to open in the fall of 2025.
